With Red Chair

by Barbara Gibson

In the “Denim Series” I have taken an iconic item and created a close-up view using line and shadow. Some images are static and appear to be cast aside or placed on a prop. In this way, shadows and highlights created by the draping and folds of the material enable a viewer to see the beauty in an everyday thing. Others images suggest the appearance of a figure. The purpose is to add power and strength to the drawing and gives the viewer the opportunity to add their own meaning. For each drawing, I add texture and detail by cross hatching with pen and ink and adding coloured pencil or graphite not only to increase the depth of each wrinkle or crease, but to add precision. When I draw, the space around each image is also important. Some are placed to the far left or right which makes the white space around it an important part of the composition. Scale is another element which I feel adds to the strength of the drawing as the form rises from the paper.
